Gary Woodland sits one shot ahead of Rickie Fowler after firing a 6-under 64 in Round 1 of the PGA Championship on Thursday.

Woodland - who has never finished inside the top 10 of a major - played flawlessly after an opening bogey, carding five birdies on the back nine while hitting 15 of 18 greens in regulation.

The 34-year-old Woodland is a three-time winner on the PGA Tour, including the 2018 Waste Management Open.

Notables Dustin Johnson, Jason Day, and Justin Rose all recorded 3-under 67s to find themselves in a large group tied for fifth.

Defending champion Justin Thomas shot 69, the best round in his group with both Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods sitting at even par.
