The Masters was only four weeks ago, but due to the recent lackluster fields on the PGA Tour, it feels a lot longer. That all changes this week for the Wells Fargo Championship, where 12 of the world's top 20 golfers are set to tee it up.
Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, N.C., will host the event, as the 7,554-yard, par-71 track has done since 2003. Last year, however, Eagle Point Golf Club stood in as the venue as Quail Hollow was used for the 2017 PGA Championship.
Tiger Woods ends his mini-break after the Masters, making his first trip to Quail Hollow since 2012. His results in Charlotte are mixed, winning in 2007 but missing his last two cuts in 2011 and 2012. The 42-year-old will look to get back on track after a mediocre showing at Augusta.
Dominance is the only way to describe Rory McIlroy's history at Quail Hollow; he is a two-time winner of the event, including a runaway victory in 2015 during which he set a tournament record at 21-under, winning by seven strokes. The four-time major winner set the course record that year, shooting a 10-under 61.
Despite not being the defending Wells Fargo champion, Justin Thomas is the last golfer to win at Quail Hollow, when he won the 2017 PGA Championship. He will be looking to pick up his third title of the PGA Tour season and climb to No. 1 in the world rankings.
2018 Masters champion Patrick Reed and 2017 U.S. Open winner Brooks Koepka join Thomas as the three reigning major winners in the field.
A strong European contingent will be present in Charlotte. Ryder Cup hopefuls Tommy Fleetwood, Paul Casey, Alex Noren, and Tyrrell Hatton, all ranked inside the global top 20, will participate as the PGA Tour schedule begins to ramp up.
Other top-20 notables playing this week include Phil Mickelson, Rickie Fowler, Jason Day, and Hideki Matsuyama.
The first round of the Wells Fargo Championship will begin Thursday, May 3.
