PGA National's toughest stretch: The Bear Trap

PGA National is home to the Honda Classic this week, and one stretch of holes will have a particularly significant influence on determining who hoists the trophy Sunday evening.

When Jack Nickaus redesigned the 15th, 16th, and 17th holes at PGA National in 1990, they earned the nickname "The Bear Trap" for a reason. Demanding tee shots, with water a factor on all three holes and high winds, make it difficult to be precise. When the work was complete, Nicklaus knew the holes would have a huge impact on the tournament, stating: "It should be won or lost right here."

Here's a look at each hole in The Bear Trap.

Par-3 15th, 179 yards

The green on this hole runs diagonally from left to right, and the putting surface is protected by water in front and to the right of the green. If players choose to play away from the flag and into the bunker behind, they'll find a difficult up-and-down. Intense winds on the tee can lead to second-guessing.

Par-4 16th, 434 yards

Of the three holes, this is probably the easiest. Players generally use a fairway wood or long iron off the tee to get it in play. The only problem they'd encounter would be a miss to the right into the water. From there, the green is elevated, but generous with the approach shot, and the water doesn't come into play.

Par-3 17th, 190 yards

The final test before the par-5 18th, this hole is very similar to the par-3 15th - just a touch longer. The 17th's tiny putting surface is protected by water and a bunker behind the green. Players going long have to navigate a green that slopes towards the water, leaving a difficult up-and-down for par.
