Phil Mickelson's 15-foot putt on 18 Thursday at the 145th Open Championship circled the edge of the cup and agonizingly spun out, forcing a tap-in par that matched the major championship scoring record of 63.

Mickelson, who has not won on tour since his last major title triumph three years ago at Muirfield, scratched down eight birdies for an unblemished opening round, which established a new course record at Royal Troon by three strokes.
He also leads the tournament by three shots over Patrick Reed.
There are now 28 rounds of 63 and 26 golfers who have accomplished that feat in major championship history. We continue to wait on the first of 62.
