Nicklas Backstrom appears to have taken an important step toward returning to the Washington Capitals' lineup.
The NHL's premier set-up man was on the ice Monday morning in a regular practice sweater - not the typical baby blue - which indicates he's been cleared for contact.

Backstrom told reporters after practice that he hasn't officially been cleared for full contact, and was in red in order to participate in more drills.
He missed Saturday's season-opening win over the New Jersey Devils as a result of offseason hip surgery, and is expected to miss at least four games.
