The New Jersey Devils will be without veteran Patrik Elias to begin the regular season.

Head coach John Hynes confirmed Elias will miss the season opener on Oct. 9 due to a lingering right knee injury, according to Tom Gulitti of Fire and Ice.

The 39-year-old, who has been held off the ice for the duration of training camp, scored 13 goals and added 21 assists in 69 games for the Devils last season.

Elias has been with the Devils since he was selected in the second round of the 1994 NHL Entry Draft.
