Rangers GM Jeff Gorton: 'I don't envision' making more offseason moves

Jeff Gorton has been busy in his first offseason as New York Rangers general manager, but he doesn't foresee making any more changes this summer.

"If there's an opportunity that presents itself, my job, our job, is to listen to anything," Gorton told reporters Monday, while addressing the signing of forward Jarret Stoll.

"We made a lot of moves to hopefully improve ourselves and we'll see. I don’t envision anything. If something comes down the road that will help the team, we'll be on another conference call."

Gorton took over for Glen Sather on July 1, after the longtime GM relinquished the role to serve exclusively as team president.

The Rangers traded forward Carl Hagelin and two draft picks to the Anaheim Ducks for Emerson Etem and the 41st overall pick, which became winger Ryan Gropp. Goaltender Cam Talbot was dealt to the Edmonton Oilers and replaced by Antti Raanta.

New York agreed to terms with forward Derek Stepan on a reported six-year, $39-million deal late last month, and also re-signed J.T. Miller and Jesper Fast.

And finally, the Rangers signed Stoll to a reported one-year, $800,000 contract Monday. Gorton said he wasn't deterred by Stoll's off-ice issues.

"(He is a) real character guy who made a mistake," Gorton said. "I think once we hit the ice. (it) is not going to be an everyday issue he's going to have to address."

The GM declined to assign an overall grade to his offseason moves.

"I get graded at home, that's enough," he said. "I know we did some things like we felt we had to do to improve the team. When we come back and play hockey we can evaluate the moves and decisions. Each move was a little separate from the other."

The Rangers now have less than $1 million in cap space, and only unrestricted free-agent forward James Sheppard remains unsigned.
