Lightning GM Yzerman: Stamkos contract extension is 'No. 1 priority'
Tampa Bay Lightning general manager Steve Yzerman has his offseason priorities in order.
"I'd like to get Steven Stamkos signed to an extension," Yzerman told reporters Wednesday at the team's final media availability. "That's my No. 1 priority.
"We've got some other restricted free agents, a couple other contracts and things we have got to do, but that's the No. 1 priority."
Yzerman said before the Stanley Cup Final that he was intent on signing Stamkos to an extension when the season ended.
The captain has one year remaining on his deal with a cap hit of $7.5 million.
Stamkos scored 43 goals in the regular season and finished in the top 10 in postseason scoring with 18 points in 26 games.
Lightning forwards Brenden Morrow and Mike Angelidis are pending unrestricted free agents, while five players, including Vladislav Namestnikov and Andrej Sustr, are set to become restricted free agents.
