The Petri Kontiola experiment has failed in Toronto.
The Maple Leafs placed the 30-year-old forward on waivers on Wednesday with a view towards terminating his NHL contract, Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet reports.
Kontiola made the jump to the NHL this summer but failed to crack Toronto's roster, and did not record a point in 11 games with the AHL Marlies.
He's expected to resume his career in the KHL.
