The Carolina Hurricanes signed goaltender Brandon Bussi to a three-year contract extension worth $1.9 million per season on Monday.

Carolina claimed Bussi off waivers from the Florida Panthers in October, and he's taken the reins as the Hurricanes' top goalie. The 27-year-old is 23-3-1 this season with two shutouts and a .906 save percentage.

"Before we brought him to Raleigh, Brandon had been successful at every level from the USHL to college to the AHL," said general manager Eric Tulsky. "Given the opportunity at the NHL level this season, he's proven to be a winner here too. We are thrilled that he will continue to provide a steady presence in the crease for this team into the future."

Bussi was never drafted and spent the past five seasons in the Boston Bruins' minor-league system.

The Hurricanes entered the Olympic break holding an eight-point advantage atop the Metropolitan Division.
