Dallas Stars captain Jamie Benn will undergo surgery for a collapsed lung and be re-evaluated in four weeks, the team announced Thursday.

He sustained the injury in Tuesday's exhibition game against the Minnesota Wild. The Stars begin their regular season Oct. 9 against the Winnipeg Jets.

Benn signed a one-year, $1-million contract with the Stars in June to stick with the club for a 17th season. The Stars selected Benn in the fifth round of the 2007 draft.

The 36-year-old forward produced 49 points in 80 games last season. However, he struggled in the playoffs with one goal and two assists and the Stars were eliminated in the Western Conference Final for the third consecutive year.

Benn ranks second in Stars history in goals (399), points (956), and games played (1,192). He trails only Hall of Famer Mike Modano in each category.
