Knoblauch: Oilers unraveled in penalty-filled 3rd period

Edmonton Oilers head coach Kris Knoblauch chalked up his team's undisciplined third period in Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Final versus the Florida Panthers to the scoreboard Monday night.

"Definitely the third period was an unraveling," Knoblauch said, according to Sportsnet's Gene Principe. "It wouldn't have happened if it was a one- (or) two-goal game. It was boys being boys."

The Oilers were hammered 6-1 as Florida took a 2-1 series advantage. A total of 140 penalty minutes were assessed in the game, making it the fourth most penalized contest in Stanley Cup Final history. A line brawl midway through the final frame, when Edmonton trailed 5-1, highlighted the chaos.

"The game obviously got out of hand at the end there," Oilers forward Evander Kane said. "That stuff is gonna happen. You look at some of the calls, and whatnot, some of them are frustrating.

"They seem to get away with it more than we do. It's tough to find the line. They're doing just as much stuff as we are. ... There seems to be a little bit more attention to our group."

Oilers superstar Connor McDavid believes Edmonton's best is yet to come in the Cup Final.

"Obviously, it wasn't our best. Not our best at all," McDavid said. "I don't think our best has shown up all series long, but it's coming. Shift the focus to finding a way to get a win in Game 4."

Kane didn't use the Oilers' penalty trouble as an excuse.

"We didn't play very well. That's evident," Kane said. "We have nobody to blame but ourselves. We can definitely be a lot better."

Game 4 goes Thursday night in Florida.
