Marlies sign C Jerred Smithson to professional tryout

Veteran NHL checking center Jerred Smithson has signed a professional tryout with the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League.

The 34-year-old has played close to 600 NHL games, while appearing in nearly 300 contests at the AHL level.

Smithson, who was acquired by the Edmonton Oilers at the trade deadline last season, split the 2013-14 NHL season between the Oilers and the Florida Panthers.
