The Montreal Canadiens dealt goaltender Michael McNiven to the Calgary Flames on Wednesday in exchange for future considerations. The Flames immediately assigned him to their AHL affiliate, the Stockton Heat.
McNiven spent the vast majority of this season with the Canadiens' AHL club, the Laval Rocket. The 24-year-old went 4-4-1 with a .869 save percentage in 11 appearances with the farm club.
He appeared in one game for Montreal in 2021-22, allowing three goals on seven shots in a loss to the Minnesota Wild on Jan. 24. That was his NHL debut, and it's still the lone contest he's played at the NHL level.
McNiven originally signed with the Canadiens as an undrafted free agent in 2015. He toiled in the AHL and ECHL for four-plus seasons before getting his brief call-up to the NHL.
