NBC hockey analyst Mike Milbury announced he is temporarily stepping away from his role after making an insensitive remark about women during a broadcast Thursday.

"In light of the attention caused by my recent remark, I have decided to step away from my role at NBC Sports for the remainder of the Stanley Cup Playoffs," Milbury's statement reads. "I do not want my presence to interfere with the athletes as they try to win the greatest trophy in sports."

Milbury's comment - which suggested women would be a distraction for players in the bubbles - was condemned by the NHL and NBC shortly after it aired.

He is the second NBC analyst to come under fire for making inappropriate remarks about women this season. Former NHL player Jeremy Roenick was suspended without pay by the network in December for unwarranted sexual comments he made about then co-worker Kathryn Tappen.

Milbury has been with the network for 13 years.
