Report: Canucks, Edler nearing agreement on 3-year extension

The Vancouver Canucks and defenseman Alex Edler are "closing in" on a three-year contract extension, reports Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman.

The deal is worth between $5 million and $5.5 million annually, according to Sportsnet's Irfaan Gaffar.

Edler, 33, has spent his entire 13-year career with the Canucks after the club drafted him in the third round of the 2004 NHL Draft. His new deal does not have a clause that will prevent him from being exposed in the upcoming Seattle expansion draft, Friedman adds.

After February's trade deadline, Canucks general manager Jim Benning said Edler was unwilling to waive his no-trade clause amid interest from teams around the league.

Injuries limited Edler to 56 games last season, but he still managed 10 goals and 24 assists while logging over 24 minutes per night.
