The Washington Redskins have re-signed backup quarterback Colt McCoy, the team announced Wednesday.

The Redskins have inked McCoy to a three-year extension, Brian McNally of CBS Washington reports.

McCoy has appeared in 35 games during his seven-year NFL career, the last two of which were spent with Washington. His return gives the Redskins stability at the quarterback position, as starter Kirk Cousins has already signed his franchise tender for the coming season.

Asked after last season whether he was open to returning to the Redskins in a reserve role, McCoy said he was.

"Could I? I definitely think I could," he said.
