The New York Giants will soon have to make a decision about the future of defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul, who is set to become an unrestricted free agent in the coming offseason.
Complicating the matter, of course, is the issue of Pierre-Paul's injured hand. However, the 26-year-old has emphasized his desire to re-sign with the Giants.
"I want to be here next year. I would like to finish my career here," said Pierre-Paul on Wednesday, according to Paul Schwartz of the NY Post.
Pierre-Paul injured his right hand in a July Fourth fireworks incident, causing him to sit out the first half of the season. He has been wearing a protective club wrap on his hand since his return in order to play.
This has limited his effectiveness, with Pierre-Paul registering 20 tackles and just a single sack this season.
Despite this, Pierre-Paul still considers himself a premier pass-rusher in the league, and while he wants to remain in New York, he will still explore options in free agency.
"We're gonna do what's best for me," said Pierre-Paul. "D-ends don't come often. Everybody knows that."
The Giants will not be playing in the postseason for a third straight season, and with a 6-9 record, they're resigned to a third straight season with a losing record, as well.
This failure has caused questions about the future of head coach Tom Coughlin, for which Pierre-Paul feels partly responsible for after missing eight games of the season.
"I feel like half of it is my fault," said Pierre-Paul, according to Ralph Vacchiano of the NY Daily News.
''The guys love him and I would love to see him back," he added.
Pierre-Paul also revealed he will undergo several more surgeries on his damaged hand, particularly his right middle finger, which is designed to help improve his grip.
