The mother of Denver Broncos wide receiver Demaryius Thomas was one of 46 drug offenders who had their prison sentences commuted by President Barack Obama on Monday.
Katina Smith will be released from prison on Nov. 10, according to multiple sources. The 42-year-old was convicted in February 2000 of trafficking cocaine along with Thomas's grandmother, Minnie Pearl Thomas.
Prior to Obama's clemency grant, Smith was set to be released in June 2017.
"The power to grant pardons and clemency is one of the most profound authorities granted to the President of the United States," Obama wrote in a letter to one of the prisoners. "It embodies the basic belief in our democracy that people deserve a second chance after having made a mistake in their lives that led to a conviction under our laws."
