Jimbo Fisher has almost done it all at the collegiate level, win a national championship, go undefeated, put a slew of talent in the NFL, so it's only right that he makes the jump, right?
Not so fast, he says. Well, sort of.
The Florida State head coach, going into his sixth season, revealed that he has been on the radar of some NFL teams and won't totally rule out the possibility of one day taking his talents to that level.
"I never say never. I'm not one of those guys that that's my end-all ambition. But in this business, you never say never," Fisher said while speaking on "ProFootballTalk Live" Tuesday, Mike Florio reports.
"I've had some opportunities to go up in the NFL and I've chosen not to do it, as coordinators and coaches – not as a head coach, I've had some people inquire. But it’s not a driving force to me to do that, not saying I wouldn't ever do it, because you’ll never know in this business. But I love being a college football coach, I love living in the south, I love being able to get three or four first-round draft picks in a class instead of only picking one.”
While Fisher says the jobs he's been offered have been for coordinator and assistant positions, he does explain that there has been recent indirect head coaching chatter.
“I've had people inquire that if I'd be interested, through agents and stuff like that,” Fisher said. “And it’s just not something that I've jumped on right away.”
Fisher affirmed that he has an admiration for working with college kids and the family atmosphere, but he simply lacks the ambition to give the NFL a whirl.
His former quarterback Jameis Winston is projected to be the top pick in this month's draft, which would give the Seminoles a third pivot to go in the first round in the Fisher era – Christian Ponder and EJ Manuel were the other two, in 2011 and 2013, respectively.
