Philadelphia Eagles general manager Howie Roseman doesn't consider this a critical year for Jalen Hurts to prove he's still the team's franchise quarterback.
"No. I don't agree with that," Roseman told 94WIP on Wednesday when asked if this is a make-or-break season for Hurts. "I think that the bottom line for us in the position that we're in, and really for all our fan base, is winning football games. And all the guy does is win football games."
The Eagles didn't sign Hurts to an extension this offseason to try to mitigate the large cap hits coming up in future years. Hurts is under contract through the 2028 season and is scheduled to have a $97.5-million cap hit on a void year in 2029, according to Over the Cap.
Hurts threw for 3,224 yards with 25 touchdowns and six interceptions in the 2025 season, adding 421 yards and eight scores on the ground. Among 33 qualifying signal-callers, Hurts ranked 12th in passer rating and 18th in EPA/dropback, according to TruMedia.
Philly's offense as a whole struggled, finishing 23rd in success rate and 24th in yards per game. The team went 11-6 and won the NFC East but lost to the San Francisco 49ers in the wild-card round.
The 28-year-old will look to make the playoffs for the sixth straight season as the Eagles' primary starting quarterback. Hurts' .718 win percentage since 2021 ranks first among 45 signal-callers with at least 20 starts, and he's reached two Super Bowls and won one during his career.
"In terms of what Jalen does, he's another guy with a tremendous track record," Roseman said. "All he does is go out and play good football. ... I know there are a lot of fan bases out there that would love the results that we've had with him as our starting quarterback."
The Eagles have a new offensive coordinator in Sean Mannion this season after firing Kevin Patullo. Mannion will be Hurts' fifth different offensive coordinator since he became the primary starter in 2021.
Philadelphia opens its season against the Washington Commanders on Sept. 13.
