Schwartz resigns as Browns DC
Jim Schwartz resigned from his role as the Cleveland Browns' defensive coordinator, the team announced Friday.
Schwartz stepped down after discussions with new head coach Todd Monken about potentially staying on for the 2026 season, sources told NFL Network's Mike Garafolo.
The 59-year-old was reportedly upset he wasn't promoted to head coach after being a finalist for the job. He apparently told people in the organization that he didn't plan to remain with the team despite being under contract.
Monken took the head coaching job after a three-year run as the Baltimore Ravens' offensive coordinator. He told reporters at his introductory press conference that Schwartz was not a factor in accepting the role.
"I didn't take this job because of Jim Schwartz. ... When I was preparing for the Cleveland Browns, I wasn't trying to chip Jim Schwartz. I was chipping Myles Garrett," Monken said, according to The 33rd Team's Ari Meirov.
Schwartz is not expected to coach next campaign, Garofalo reports. He's been the Browns' defensive coordinator for the last three seasons, helping Cleveland rank first in EPA/play and success rate during that stretch, according to Ben Baldwin's database.
Schwartz was the defensive coordinator for the Philadelphia Eagles from 2016-20, helping the franchise secure its first Lombardi Trophy in Super Bowl LII.
