Goff not worried about new Lions OC: Morton 'getting used to us still'

Lions quarterback Jared Goff isn't concerned about how the team will look under new offensive coordinator John Morton after Detroit struggled in its season-opening loss to the Green Bay Packers.

"He's getting used to us still, we're getting used to him still, and some of that progression is still happening," Goff said on 97.1 The Ticket Tuesday. "But it's all moving in the right direction, it's all stuff I'm optimistic about, and by no means am I worried about any of it."

Morton, 55, has one season of experience as an NFL offensive coordinator, having previously served in that role during the 2017 campaign with the New York Jets. He replaces former Lions OC Ben Johnson, who's now head coach of the Chicago Bears.

Detroit's offense totaled just 246 yards Sunday, its second fewest in any game since 2022. Goff finished the contest having completed 31 passes for 225 yards with one touchdown and one interception. He was also sacked four times, and the offense went just 5-of-15 on third-down converstions.

The Lions' run game didn't give Goff any help, totaling 46 yards on 22 total attempts.

"It's a new human," said Goff said of Morton. "There's different things going on. I think back to 2022 when Ben was in his first year and we started 1-6. Not by any means saying that's where we're headed, but I think there were growing pains there, too, offensively.

"And then we got into a good rhythm halfway through the year. Certainly, we want to get into that rhythm this week, though. We don't want to wait until Week 6 or 7 to find that out. But I think that's natural when there's a new coordinator, a new guy calling plays."

Goff, 30, has been the Lions' starting quarterback since 2021. He led Detroit to a 27-7 regular-season record over the last two years and ranked fourth among 26 qualifying signal-callers during that stretch, according to Ben Baldwin's database.

The Lions will look to bounce back against Johnson and the Bears in Week 2.

"We're going to win this game. We have to," head coach Dan Campbell said Monday.
