Giants legend Taylor doesn't want Carter to wear No. 56: 'Get another number'
New York Giants third overall pick Abdul Carter told Dallas Cowboys' Micah Parsons on Thursday night that he wants to wear Lawrence Taylor's No. 56 this season.
However, the Giants legend pushed back on the idea of Carter wearing the number.
"I know he would love to wear that number, but hey, I think it’s retired. Get another number, I don’t care if it’s double zero, and then make it famous," Taylor told The New York Post’s Steve Serby.
Taylor spent 13 seasons with the Giants from 1981-1993 and is considered one of the best players in franchise history. His number was retired in 1994, so Carter would likely need Taylor's permission to wear it.
The Penn State product responded to Taylor denying his request to wear No. 56 on social media.
"The worst thing he could say was NO!! My stance don’t change, LT is the GOAT, nothing but respect. … This just gonna make me work even harder!! I love it," he posted on X.
Cam Ward, the first overall pick in the 2025 draft, got Tennessee Titans franchise legend Warren Moon's blessing to wear No. 1 for the upcoming season.
Carter wore No. 11 at Penn State, and it's unclear what number he will pick after getting shut down by Taylor.
