Fields starts vs. Falcons, Wilson out with calf injury
Quarterback Justin Fields drew the start for the Pittsburgh Steelers in their season opener against the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday.
The Steelers initially named Russell Wilson their starter in late August but ruled him out with a calf injury.
The 35-year-old experienced tightness in his calf this week and was listed as questionable on the injury report. Wilson was a limited participant in practice Thursday and Friday but told team doctors he's healthy enough to play, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.
Fields took first-team reps at practice Friday, per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. The 25-year-old suited up for all three of Pittsburgh's preseason games, completing 19 passes on 27 attempts for 199 yards and no touchdowns.
Pittsburgh acquired Fields for a conditional sixth-round pick this offseason from the Chicago Bears. He's in the final year of his rookie deal after the club declined his fifth-year option.
The Ohio State product is 10-28 in 38 career starts, racking up 8,894 total yards and 54 scores.
