The Washington Commanders are signing free-agent quarterback Marcus Mariota to a one-year, $6-million deal that can rise to $10 million with incentives, sources told Adam Schefter of ESPN.

Mariota spent last season with the Philadelphia Eagles as Jalen Hurts' backup. He appeared in three games, throwing for 164 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Most of his playing time came in Week 18 when the Eagles pulled many of their starters.

The 30-year-old opened the 2022 season as the Atlanta Falcons' starting quarterback. He went 5-8 in 13 starts before being benched for then-rookie Desmond Ridder. Mariota spent time with the Las Vegas Raiders following a five-year tenure in Tennessee that began when the Titans selected him second overall in the 2015 draft.

Washington rolled with Sam Howell as its starting signal-caller last season. He went 4-13 with 3,946 passing yards, 21 touchdowns, and 21 interceptions. The Commanders drafted Howell in the fifth round in 2022, and he's under contract through the 2025 campaign.

Jacoby Brissett, Howell's backup last season, signed with the New England Patriots on Monday. Washington holds the No. 2 pick in April's draft.
