New York Giants general manager Joe Schoen projects Daniel Jones to be the team's starting quarterback once he's recovered from the torn ACL he sustained in November.
"The expectation is when Daniel is healthy that he'll be our starting quarterback," Schoen said Monday.
Schoen pointed to the team's success in 2022 with Jones under center when asked why he remains confident in the 26-year-old.
"You guys all saw last season. The guy won 10 games. He won a road playoff game for the Giants. You guys saw the preseason," Schoen said. "I just think we got punched in the nose early on and we dug ourselves a hole and we weren't able to get out of it. We're trying to right now, but we still believe in Daniel."
The team opened the 2023 season 1-4 with Jones before he missed three games with a neck injury. Jones tore his ACL when he returned for the club's Week 9 matchup with the Las Vegas Raiders.
Jones' completion rate increased this season to a career-high 67.5%, but his yards per game (151.5), touchdown percentage (1.3%), and interception percentage (3.8%) were all career worsts. The Duke product finished his campaign with 909 yards, two touchdowns, and six interceptions in six appearances.
Schoen anticipates adding a quarterback this offseason despite backing Jones, in part due to the unpredictability involved in rehabbing a significant injury.
"I think we're going to have to do something on the quarterback, whether it's free agency or the draft," the 44-year-old general manager said. "I mean, just where we are, Tyrod (Taylor)'s contract is up, (Tommy) DeVito is obviously under contract, and Daniel, we don't know when he's going to be ready. So, just from an offseason program standpoint, I think that'll be a position that we'll have to look at."
