The Detroit Lions are signing Adrian Peterson to a one-year contract, sources told Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero of NFL Network.

The legendary running back's deal is worth $1.05 million plus incentives, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.

Peterson was cut by the Washington Football Team on Friday as part of their cut to 53 players.

The 35-year-old will reunite with Lions offensive coordinator Darell Bevell, who held the same role with the Minnesota Vikings for Peterson's first three NFL seasons.

Peterson will likely compete for carries behind Kerryon Johnson and rookie D'Andre Swift.

Peterson continues to defy the odds late in his career. After unsuccessful stints with the New Orleans Saints and Arizona Cardinals in 2017, he bounced back in two campaigns with Washington, racking up 1,940 yards and 12 touchdowns on the ground.

The 2012 MVP sits fifth on the NFL's all-time rushing list with 14,216 yards, most of which came with the Vikings from 2007 to 2016.

Peterson needs 4,140 yards to pass leader Emmitt Smith and 1,054 yards to jump fourth-placed Barry Sanders.
