Philip Rivers will soon hit free agency for the first time in his NFL career, and his soon-to-be former Los Angeles Chargers teammate Melvin Gordon has a prediction for the quarterback's next destination.

"I think he goes to the (Indianapolis) Colts," the running back told CBS Sports' John Breech last Thursday. "I don't know, that's just my thought."

Gordon believes Indy will be Rivers' next landing spot due to the links between the team and the veteran signal-caller.

Colts head coach Frank Reich was the Chargers' offensive coordinator from 2014-15, while offensive coordinator Nick Sirianni was an offensive assistant for five years with the AFC West club.

"They run the same playbook, so it'd be easy, he could come right in and he could be telling guys what to do, he knows what's going on already," Gordon said.

After the announcement that he'd leave the Chargers, Rivers said he wants to play for a "maximum" of two more years.

It remains to be seen whether the Colts are interested in a short-term fix under center or if they'll look to the draft for Andrew Luck's successor. Indy owns the 13th overall pick and is expected to do its due diligence on the top group of quarterbacks.

Jacoby Brissett had an up-and-down 2019 campaign after being thrown into the starting role following Luck's shock retirement. The former backup signal-caller is contracted for the 2020 season.

However, Rivers also struggled last year. The 38-year-old had 20 interceptions - tied for the second-highest mark of his career - and his 23 touchdown passes were his fewest since 2007.
