O'Brien believes Texans will maintain current FO structure with no GM
The Houston Texans operated without a general manager during the 2019 season and head coach Bill O'Brien doesn't see that changing anytime soon.
"The way I see it right now, it stays the way it is," O'Brien said in his end-of-season press conference Monday, according to ESPN's Sarah Barshop.
The Texans fired former general manager Brian Gaine in June and struck out in their attempt to lure personnel man Nick Caserio from the New England Patriots this offseason. Houston proceeded with Jack Easterby, Matt Bazirgan, James Liipfert, and Chris Olsen sharing GM duties, with O'Brien getting the final say.
The Texans were still one of the more active teams in the league, in terms of making transactions, over the course of the year. Their deals included trading pass-rusher Jadeveon Clowney to the Seattle Seahawks for linebackers Barkevious Mingo and Jacob Martin. They also acquired left tackle Laremy Tunsil and receiver Kenny Stills from the Miami Dolphins for a package that included their 2020 and 2021 first-round draft picks.
Tunsil, Stills, and Mingo were key contributors toward Houston's early 24-0 lead over the Kansas City Chiefs in the divisional-round game on Sunday, though the Texans went on to lose 51-31.
