Report: Giants considering shutting Shepard down for season

The New York Giants are considering season-ending injured reserve for Sterling Shepard, who has struggled to come back from his second documented concussion of the season, team sources told SNY's Ralph Vacchiano.

The wide receiver missed Monday night's loss to the Dallas Cowboys after being placed back in the concussion protocol. Shepard initially cleared the protocol before experiencing more symptoms the day before the game.

Shepard was sent to a concussion specialist in Pittsburgh on Wednesday. The 26-year-old suffered his first concussion of the year in the season opener, missing one game as a result. He sustained his second concussion in Week 5 and hasn't played since.

"You can kind of wing an ankle or other injuries, but when it comes to your brain, you only have one of those," teammate Golden Tate said. "And the picture outside of football is way more important, I think. Me being married and having a family, that's kind of the most important thing in my life and it's more important for me to remember my child's childhood than to force myself to play right here and now.

"So, we want him to understand that we support him, we're praying for him, and we want him to make sure that he's right."

Shepard has 25 receptions for 267 yards and one touchdown in four games this season. He signed a four-year, $41-million extension with the Giants before the 2019 campaign.
