Michael Bennett will become a free agent in 2020 after restructuring his contract as part of the trade that brought him to the Dallas Cowboys, sources told Tom Pelissero of NFL Network.
The three-time Pro Bowl defensive lineman was initially signed through the 2020 season, keeping him off the open market until March 2021.
Bennett was shipped to Dallas from the New England Patriots after serving a one-game suspension following a squabble with his position coach. The 33-year-old made over $5.6 million from the Patriots and will be able to earn north of $2 million for the remainder of the season with the Cowboys, according to Pelissero.
Bennett notched five tackles and 2.5 sacks over six outings with the Patriots. He joined New England through a trade with the Philadelphia Eagles, where he played one season. The Texas A&M product starred on the Seattle Seahawks from 2013-17 and played an integral role on the team that captured Super Bowl XLVIII.
