Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton remains in a walking boot Wednesday as his mid-foot sprain continues to heal, a source told NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

The Panthers will know more about their signal-caller's Week 3 status in the coming days. If he can practice before Sunday, Newton has a chance to play versus the Arizona Cardinals, Rapoport reported. However, if he doesn't practice, it's unlikely he suits up.

Newton aggravated the foot injury he suffered during the preseason on Thursday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Carolina said it considers him day-to-day. He did not participate in Wednesday's practice, according to Jourdan Rodrigue of The Athletic.

The former MVP has missed time due to injury in two of the past three seasons after leading Carolina to a Super Bowl berth in 2015. He spent the 2019 offseason recovering from shoulder surgery.

Second-year undrafted quarterback Kyle Allen would likely start against the Cardinals if Newton isn't cleared to play.
