Minnesota Vikings rookie tight end Irv Smith Jr. has chosen to wear No. 84, the uniform made famous by Hall of Fame wide receiver Randy Moss.

"It's funny because I wore 82 in college and my dad wore 82 in the league, and he wore 84 in college so I felt like it'd be cool to switch it up a little bit," Smith told reporters Friday, according to ESPN's Courtney Cronin.

Smith, who was drafted in the second round out of Alabama, will become the fourth Viking to don No. 84 since Moss last sported it in 2010. Bucky Hodges previously held the distinction as the fourth player to take the number but was released in 2017 before appearing in a game.

Moss was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame last year and went in as a Viking. He played for Minnesota from 1998 to 2004 and for four games in 2010.

The wideout ranks fourth in NFL history in career receiving yardage and second in receiving touchdowns. The Vikings have retired six jersey numbers, but evidently, Moss' No. 84 isn't one of them.
