The Miami Dolphins are currently without a long-term option at quarterback, but they reportedly tried to rectify that issue before the 2018 season.

The Dolphins approached the Detroit Lions about a trade for franchise pivot Matthew Stafford ahead of last season, sources told the Miami Herald's Armando Salguero.

Then-coach Adam Gase reached out to the Lions' Matt Patricia, but the Detroit coach wasn't willing to part with his starting quarterback, according to Salguero.

Lions general manager Bob Quinn denied such trade talks took place, according to Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press.

The Dolphins went with incumbent starter Ryan Tannehill for the 2018 season and, after a 7-9 season, traded him to the Tennessee Titans this offseason. Miami has since signed veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick to a two-year deal.
