Report: Falcons placing Freeman on IR

Bob Donnan / USA TODAY Sports

The Atlanta Falcons will place running back Devonta Freeman on injured reserve Tuesday, FOX Sports' Jay Glazer reports.

He was ruled out from Sunday's game with a foot injury and was likely going to miss Week 7 with a groin ailment, head coach Dan Quinn said on Monday. Now, the fifth-year pro will undergo groin surgery, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports, citing a source.

With the IR designation, Freeman will miss a minimum of eight games, but could return before the season ends if all goes well, Rapoport adds.

Freeman has only appeared in two games this year. He missed three games after the season opener due to a knee injury and returned in Week 5 where he handled eight carries before leaving with the foot ailment.

The 2-4 Falcons rank 29th in rushing. Backups Tevin Coleman and Ito Smith have shouldered the load in Freeman's absence.
