Atlanta Falcons running back Devonta Freeman is expected to miss 2-3 weeks with a knee contusion, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Freeman suffered the injury during the season opener against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sept. 6. He was already ruled out of Sunday's game against the Carolina Panthers.

Tevin Coleman will feature as the team's lead back in Freeman's absence.

Falcons head coach Dan Quinn told reporters on Friday that there's no structural damage to Freeman's knee.

Freeman is an important component of the Falcons' offense and was named to the Pro Bowl in 2015 and 2016.
