The NFL announced Friday that Indianapolis Colts running back Robert Turbin has been suspended without pay for the first four games of the 2018 season for violating the league's policy on performance-enhancing substances.
The earliest Turbin could return to the active roster is Monday, Oct. 1, ahead of the team's Week 5 game against the New England Patriots.
Turbin announced Thursday that he was facing a suspension.
In a statement, Turbin said he'd been informed that a urine sample resulted in a positive test of a banned substance. The NFL has yet to make a related announcement.
"It absolutely kills me that I allowed this to happen," Turbin wrote. "Unfortunately, I have made a mistake. A mistake that will not only have personal consequences, but will affect the Colts organization, an organization that I am extremely appreciative to be a part of. For that, I'm truly sorry."
Turbin joined the Colts in 2016 and has played sparingly in the past two seasons.
The seven-year vet suffered a season-ending arm injury in October.
