The New York Giants have cleared some room in the backfield for rookie Saquon Barkley, announcing Thursday that they've released running back Paul Perkins ahead of his third season.

Perkins recently underwent surgery for a torn pectoral suffered prior to the start of the team's offseason conditioning program.

The fifth-round pick of the 2016 draft rushed for 456 yards on 112 attempts as a rookie, but managed just 90 yards on 41 attempts last season. He's played a total of 25 career games but remains without a touchdown.

Jonathan Stewart, Wayne Gallman, and Jalen Simmons are the remaining names behind Barkley on the Giants' depth chart.
