Bill Belichick has been handpicked by U.S. President Donald Trump for a new role.

Trump announced on Friday that he intends to appoint the New England Patriots head coach as a member of his Council on Sport, Fitness, and Nutrition.

Belichick hasn't been shy about his support for Trump, confirming he wrote a supportive letter to the Republican candidate ahead of the 2016 election and defending it by stating their "friendship goes back many years."

"My comments are not politically motivated in my friendship and loyalty to Donald," Belichick said at the time.

The sports council will also include former NFL running back Herschel Walker, Dr. Mehmet Oz, golfer Natalie Gulbis, retired baseball closer Mariano Rivera, and beach volleyball legend Misty May-Treanor, among others.
