Philadelphia Eagles defensive end Michael Bennett was indicted Friday for the felony charge of injury of the elderly, according to the office of the Harris County district attorney.

The incident occurred at the end of Super Bowl LI at NRG Stadium in Houston on Feb. 5, 2017. Attempting to make his way onto the field to celebrate his brother Martellus' victory with the New England Patriots, Bennett was told by security personnel he had to use a different entrance for field access.

Houston police said in a press conference Friday that Bennett instead forced his way through stadium security, specifically pushing past a 66-year-old paraplegic woman, who suffered injuries including a sprained shoulder.

"I think it's pretty pathetic that you would put your hands on a 66-year-old paraplegic and just treat them like they don't exist," Houston police chief Art Acevedo said, according to Q13 Fox.

After knocking down the stadium workers, Bennett allegedly had a confrontation with an officer whom he swore at before making his way to the field. Houston police say the officer chose to attend to the fallen workers rather than chase down Bennett.

Bennett was indicted by a Harris County grand jury and a warrant has been issued for his arrest. Prosecutors are in contact with Bennett's counsel and are hopeful he will surrender quickly.

Authorities say there is no video evidence of the incident. The charge carries a penalty of up to 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

The Eagles released a statement about the incident Friday afternoon:

"We are aware of the situation involving Michael Bennett and are in the process of gathering more information. Because this is an ongoing legal matter, we will have no further comment at this time."

A league spokesman announced the NFL is looking into the incident, according to Eliot Shorr-Parks of NJ.com.
