The New York Giants asked cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie to take a "significant" pay cut, sources told NFL Network's Mike Garafolo.

Rodgers-Cromartie is scheduled to earn $6.48 million in base salary for the 2018 season. Neither party has made a final decision, but Garafolo reports that the Giants and Rodgers-Cromartie aren't close to an agreement.

The 31-year-old recorded 48 tackles and a pass deflection in 15 games during the 2017 season. He went through a turbulent year, however, and was suspended by the Giants in October for an unexcused absence from the team facility.

It was reported that the Giants envision Rodgers-Cromartie as a safety under new head coach Pat Shurmur, who was hired in January to take over for Ben McAdoo, who was fired in December.
