NFLPA executive director to meet with Bennett, issues statement

NFLPA executive director DeMaurice Smith will meet with Michael Bennett on Thursday, after the Seattle Seahawks defensive end was detained by police officers in Las Vegas on Aug. 26.

Video emerged from the incident where Bennett alleged that police used excessive force on him. Bennett released his own statement Wednesday, alleging that officers threatened to "blow (his) fucking head off."

Smith's statement reads as follows:

We have seen Michael's statement, who is one of our player leaders. Social justice is an issue that all NFL players - just like all Americans - have a right to fight for and demand. We support Michael, just like we do all players, and we are sorry for him and his family that he had that experience. I have reached out to Michael and look forward to seeing him at our union meeting in Seattle tomorrow.

Bennett was in Las Vegas to attend the Floyd Mayweather-Conor McGregor fight.

"I didn't ask for this moment; it just happened to be me. I'm just lucky to be here to be able to speak about it," Bennett said during his press conference Wednesday. "At any moment I could've made the wrong decision … (and) the Seahawks would be wearing the patch with number 72 on it."

Bennett has been among the most active players in the league in speaking out against police brutality and this alleged incident committed against him will almost certainly fuel his endeavors going into the upcoming season.
