An earlier version of this story quoted Jerry Jones suggesting "good news" could be on the way. A correction to initial transcripts of his comments indicated that the Cowboys owner actually said "more news" was to come as the week moves forward.
Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones continues his reluctance to speak in depth about Ezekiel Elliott's six-game suspension, the running back's appeal, and the ongoing war between the NFL and the NFL Players Association over the case.
However, Jones did confirm that the end could be in sight, as the arbitrator of Elliott's appeal, Harold Henderson, nears a decision.
"I don't want to make the comment, and I know y'all can imagine with all that we have flying around the courtrooms and the basic hearing rooms," Jones said when asked about Elliott, according to Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio. "That would be one I'd pass on this morning."
He added: "I'll have more news for you as we get into the week."
Henderson was expected to make a ruling by 4 p.m. Tuesday. However, a league source told NFL Network's Tom Pelissero that there's no deadline for the arbitrator to make a decision.
The deadline was assumed because, in the past, the NFL has finalized suspensions by then in order to preserve fairness and competitive balance.
While the NFL isn't reportedly sticking to the deadline, Elliott's camp believes it applies, a league source told Florio.
Again, Jones refused to say if he expects a decision Tuesday, though he admitted there will be answers in the next few days.
"I don’t know," Jones said. "I can give you reasons. We spent time on this the last few days. Timing, as it turns out, is a pretty critical component here in terms of the ambiguity for lack of a better word. There's a lot of things that impact availability relative to timing both places at the hearing and the court level. And I know - I'm just being redundant with what you guys know - but I really, when you really think hard about it, you don't know timing wise. But a lot clears up over the next 24 to 36 hours."
Elliott and the NFLPA are also going to federal court to challenge his suspension, filing for a temporary restraining order. The NFL responded by filing a motion to dismiss the order Monday.
