Report: Redskins sign Jay Gruden to 2-year extension

The Washington Redskins have signed head coach Jay Gruden to a two-year contract extension, a source told ESPN's John Keim.

Gruden originally signed a five-year, $20-million contract when he was hired in January 2014.

In three seasons, Gruden's posted a cumulative 21-26-1 record.

He now enters a pivotal offseason after the Redskins placed the franchise tag on quarterback Kirk Cousins. Armed with approximately $36 million in cap space, the Redskins are well-positioned to improve their roster, and Gruden is tasked with leading them back atop the NFC East after missing the playoffs in 2016.

This is the first head coach that Redskins owner Dan Snyder has ever given an extension, according to Grant Paulsen of 106.7 The Fan.

This is also probably the best 50th birthday present Gruden could've received.
