Texans' O'Brien: Evaluation needed before naming Osweiler starter again

After putting forth one of the least impressive performances of his underwhelming season against the New England Patriots on Saturday, Brock Osweiler has some work to do this offseason if he wants to keep his job.

The Houston Texans' $72-million quarterback threw three interceptions and failed to top 200 yards despite making 40 attempts, making it difficult for head coach Bill O'Brien to commit to Osweiler as the starter heading into their offseason program.

"Before I talk about those types of things, I have to evaluate it myself," O'Brien told ESPN's Sarah Barshop about who will sit atop the quarterback depth chart in the offeason. "I've got to talk to our coaching staff, get their input, personnel people, get their input.

"So I wouldn't be a good head coach if I stood up here and said, this is what I'm planning to do. The game is less than 48 hours ago. We're going to evaluate everything."

Osweiler went through last offseason as the assumed starter, getting first-team reps the entire way despite comments that he was struggling to grasp the play book. He was benched for backup Tom Savage and may not have regained his starting job had it not been for an injury to the replacement quarterback.
