Washington Redskins All-Pro left tackle Trent Williams has been suspended four games without pay for violating the league's substance abuse policy, the team announced Tuesday.
The suspension will cost the star lineman $1.65 million in base salary and game bonuses, according to ESPN's Field Yates.
"We met with Trent today to discuss this unfortunate news," the team said in a statement. "Per the terms of the policy, Trent will be permitted to participate in team meetings and work out at the Redskins' facilities throughout this time."
Williams has been a stalwart for the Redskins since joining the team in 2010. He has been named to the past four Pro Bowls and has started every game he's played in since his rookie year. He's been called for only three penalties in eight games this season.
The Redskins are on bye this week, before big NFC battles with the Minnesota Vikings, Green Bay Packers, Dallas Cowboys, and Arizona Cardinals. Williams will be eligible to rejoin the team after the game against Arizona.
"The Redskins are counting on Trent to help our team when he returns from suspension. Our focus will now turn to the Minnesota Vikings after our bye this upcoming weekend," the team said.
Williams was suspended for four games in late 2011 for failing multiple drug tests.
