Cleveland Browns defensive end Desmond Bryant underwent surgery Tuesday to repair a torn pectoral muscle, the club announced Wednesday.

Anthony Lima of CBS-19 TV first reported the news.

Bryant suffered the injury last week and is likely out for the 2016 season. The injury occurred while Bryant was lifting weights, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

"First off, thank you to all the fans, friends, and family who have reached out expressing their well wishes in response to the news of my injury," Bryant said in a statement. "While I'm frustrated and disappointed about having to miss some time out there with my teammates, I take comfort in knowing that preparations have already begun for an epic return."

Bryant, a seven-year veteran, had 33 tackles and a team-leading six sacks in 14 games last season.

The 30-year-old was expected to be a starting defensive end next season. Rookie Carl Nassib and John Hughes will likely battle in training camp to fill Bryant's spot.
