Providence has signed head coach Ed Cooley to a long-term contract extension that the school says will make the 46-year-old a "Friar for life."
Terms of the agreement were not disclosed, but athletic director Bob Driscoll said in a statement that the deal should keep Cooley at Providence for as long as he wants to continue coaching.
"Ed has done so much for the college and for the athletics department," Driscoll said. "He indicated to us that he wants finish his coaching career at Providence College and he is the person we want to guide our men’s basketball program. We are thrilled that Ed will be a Friar for life."
Providence was reportedly close to completing an extension with Cooley on Monday. Cooley is coming off his fifth year at the helm of the Friars, amassing a 103-67 record.
"Providence has always been my destination," said Cooley, who led the Friars to their first NCAA tournament win since 1997 with a Round 1 victory over USC at the beginning of the month. "We are excited that we will be at Providence College for life."
The Friars reached the No. 8 spot on the AP Poll earlier this year, marking the program's highest national ranking in 39 years.
