Capitals sign Marcus Johansson to 1-year, $3.75-million contract

The Washington Capitals have re-signed forward Marcus Johansson after an independent arbitrator awarded a one-year, $3.75-million contract Friday.

Though he'll receive a $1.75 million raise from last season, the number does favor the team. The Capitals' reported ask was $3 million, while Johansson was seeking $4.75 million on a one-year term.

He scored a career-best 20 goals and 47 points last season in a top-six role, seeing time with Washington's world-class duo of Alex Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom.

The rub for the cap-crunched Capitals, however, is that they acquired top-six contributors T.J. Oshie and Justin Williams already this offseason, and run the risk of Johansson being wildly overpaid if he slides into a lesser role.

Washington has less than $1-million in cap space following the ruling, but are set up quite well with all their parts now in place.
